Ford Fusion Hybrid is Growing Leaves!

We all know that hybrid vehicles have some great advantages when it comes to fuel efficiency, but did you know that your style of driving can have a significant impact on your own fuel efficiency? Well, it certainly does. Engineers at Ford, not content to go the simple-but-effective route, have designed an efficiency meter for the Ford Fusion Hybrid and the Ford C-Max Hybrid that does more than monitor your driving efficiency—it uses an engaging digital display to actually encourage efficient driving. Check out the video below to learn more!

The idea behind the system is to make driving efficiency fun, to make it feel like a game, the outcome of which would be a subconscious inclination toward efficient driving behaviors, or the behaviors that help you “win” the game. In this case, the game is a series of “growing” and “wilting” digital leaves displayed in the instrument cluster. The more leaves you get growing, the more efficiently you’re driving; the fewer leaves you have, or the more you see “wilt,” the less efficiently you’re driving. It’s pretty simple, but the implications are intriguing. What do you think, can an engaging meter actually train drivers to be more efficient?
